A Purpose-Built Offshore Weapon That Doubles as a Family Cruiser

Surtees 770 Game Fisher

New Zealand plate alloy specialist Surtees has added another serious contender to its hardtop lineup with the 770 Game Fisher — a vessel that blends hardcore fishing capability with genuine family cruising comfort.

As the largest full-trailerable model in the Surtees range at 2.5 metres wide, the 770 Game Fisher can be towed without oversize permits, making it a practical choice for anglers who trailer regularly. It slots in just below the flagship 800 Game Fisher, which stretches to a 2.8-metre beam and requires permits for road transport.

Built Tough for Offshore Conditions

True to the Surtees DNA, the 770 is constructed from heavy-gauge plate aluminium — 6mm on the bottom, 4mm on the topsides, and 3mm for the cabin. The 20-degree deadrise hull is designed to handle rough offshore conditions with confidence, and at 1,740 kg hull weight (approximately 3,100 kg towing weight), it has the heft to punch through chop comfortably.

The enclosed hardtop cabin provides excellent protection from the elements, with sliding side windows for ventilation, supportive bucket seats with flip-up bolsters for stand-up driving, and full-length welded alloy handrails overhead.

A Cockpit Made for Fishing

The 2.85-metre long cockpit is where the 770 Game Fisher really earns its name. The generous fishing platform stretches from the cabin’s bi-fold glass doors to the 785-mm high transom wall, offering plenty of room to work fish without feeling cramped. The layout is designed around serious angling, with features that dedicated fishers will appreciate from the first outing.

Family-Friendly Amenities

Despite its fishing focus, the 770 doesn’t skimp on creature comforts. The helm station houses a 50-litre fridge beneath a single-burner diesel cooktop, while the port side features a freshwater sink with hot and cold running water fed by an 80-litre water tank. A two-person swing-back bench seat and fold-out timber table create a compact dinette — perfect for lunch on the water or sheltering during a rain squall.

An optional toilet adds further liveability for extended trips, making the 770 a genuine overnighter when the fishing is too good to leave.

Power and Electronics

The 770 Game Fisher accepts up to 350 hp on the transom. The review vessel was fitted with a Yamaha 350 hp V6 four-stroke paired with the Yamaha Helm Master EX joystick control system and a large Garmin GPSMAP 9019 chartplotter — a combination that delivers effortless boat handling and top-tier navigation.

A 400-litre fuel tank provides the range needed for serious offshore missions, while a 530-litre water ballast system helps optimise ride quality and stability.

The Verdict

The Surtees 770 Game Fisher strikes an impressive balance. It delivers the rugged construction and fishing functionality that serious anglers demand, while providing enough comfort and amenities for family days on the water. The 2.5-metre beam keeps it legal for standard towing, yet the interior space rivals boats well above its class. For anyone looking for a do-everything hardtop that doesn’t compromise on its fishing credentials, the 770 is well worth a closer look.
